Excerpt from Twenty-Fourth Annual Report of the National Farm School: November, 1921 The latest census of the United States shows the ratio of urban population to rural population in our State, and in the State of New York, two to one. The State of New Jersey has two and a half million urban population and only one-half million of rural. More than half of the population of Connecticut, which at one time was almost entirely a farming State, is now urban. The same is true of other of the New England States, of the States of the Middle West, of California. A recent issue of the Chicago Tribune illustrates quite graphically the present unbalanced state in the distribution of our population. It shows two pictures, side by side, one representing a sturdy farmer carrying on his shoulder, with great ease, a small man, the farmer representing the rural population of one hundred years ago, the little fellow on his shoulders representing the city population of that time. The other picture shows a small farmer, bent to the ground by the weight of a big man on his shoulders. Here the small farming population is made to bear the great burden of city population. Looking upon this latter picture, which represents the present time, one cannot but ask: "What, if the overburdened farmer sink exhausted, where will the burly fellow on top of him get his food?" During the past summer a great cry arose from the farmers of the far Western States for hands to help garner the crops that were ripe for the reaper - a cry that was but faintly answered. During the same time another great cry arose from the cities in the East, a cry for employment, a cry that, likewise, was meagerly answered, because of decreased demand for goods, the decrease having largely been brought about by the laboring people themselves, by their insistence upon receiving, in these deflated peace days, the wages paid them during the inflated war-times.
